Our Story

Eumundi is best known for its Wednesday and Saturday markets which attract thousands of visitors each week to this normally laid-back hinterland town.

Nearly 30 years later a number of community and commercial entities work together to host the markets and ensure that your Eumundi experience is special!

Our History

1800s – 1900s

Eumundi’s name evolved out of the name given to an indigenous Kabi Kabi warrior said to be called “Ngumundi” or “Huomundy” who lived in the area in the 1830’s.
From the mid 1800’s, Eumundi became part of three cattle runs of the region and the first road was built in the 1860’s. With roads and rail connecting the township to other areas, industries such as timber harvesting, dairying and banana farming emerged.

In the early 1900’s the main street was built and soon after came two hotels, a butter factory, two banks a blacksmith and several other storekeepers. In 1917, 20 Memorial fig trees were planted along the main street to commemorate the 20 soldiers from the area that had lost their lives in WW1, hence the name of the main street becoming ‘Memorial Drive’.

1960 – 2006

By the 1960’s most dairy and banana farming practices were proving uneconomical yet in 1979 the Eumundi Markets were first established with just three stalls on a Saturday morning organised by one community organisation. From humble beginnings, the markets grew to reinvigorate the town with the markets becoming an integral part of the township’s charm and character.
The year 2000 and beyond has seen the Eumundi Markets grow to approximately 600 stalls with a number of community and commercial entities working together hosting the markets to ensure that the Eumundi experience is unique, special and memorable to visitors and locals each Wednesday and Saturday.

Then in 2006 the Eumundi Square micro business incubator opened its doors and has nurtured many local emerging artists, jewellery makers and designers wanting to grow their businesses even further. Eumundi Square accommodates and mentors up to 90 permanent retail shops open to visitors each Friday as well as market days.
